Capital Bulletin: May 2024 Edition
National Nurses Month Recap:
On May 8, AACN, as the proud convener of the Nursing Community Coalition, joined our colleagues at the “Thank A Nurse” Reception on Capitol Hill. The event was widely attended by nursing students, faculty, organization leaders, and many members of Congress. While National Nurses Week may have ended, we continue to advocate for our nursing schools, faculty, and students throughout the year and look forward to our ongoing, united efforts to support the needs of academic nursing.
May 23: AACN signed onto a letter thanking the leadership of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee for the effort to reauthorize the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act (S.3679/H.R.7153).
May 22: AACN signed onto an American Council on Education letter urging Congress to enact several proposals to address problems created by FAFSA delays.
May 14: AACN signed on to a letter supporting funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDCs) Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program.
May 14: AACN signed onto letters from American Indian/Alaska Native Health Partners to the House and Senate supporting funding for the Indian Health Professions Account and Indian Health Service.
May 14: AACN signed on to a letter supporting at least $100 million in FY 2025 for the CDC’s Social Determinants of Health program, within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP).
May 8: AACN sent a letter to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to express appreciation for the impactful work that the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) is doing to address the challenges facing nursing education and the critical issues impacting the pipeline into nursing.
May 6: AACN signed onto a urging an increase in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 allocation for the Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee and to ensure that non-defense discretionary (NDD) funding is not cut in the FY 2025 appropriations process.
May 6: AACN signed onto a Nursing Community Coalition letter urging Congress to take action on top appropriations and legislative priorities that impact nursing education, workforce, and research.
Additional Highlights:
May 2 and 3: AACN submitted written testimony for the record to the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) requesting at least $530 million for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs and at least $210 million for the National Institute of Nursing Research for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025. AACN also signed onto Nursing Community Coalition written testimony for the record to the House and Senate LHHS Subcommittees making the same request.
May 2: AACN signed on to a letter to the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) supporting $11.581 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP).

This program provides up to $40,000 in loan repayment assistance and funding to offset the tax burden for individuals who are faculty and commit to serving two years at an eligible health professions school. Individuals who are eligible to apply must come from a disadvantaged background, have an eligible health professions degree or certificate, and are a faculty member at an approved health profession school. Registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply is June 27, 2024, at 7:30 pm (ET).

This program provides up to $250,000 in loan repayment, in return for a commitment to work full-time for six-years in a STAR LRP-approved facility. Registered nurses, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists, psychiatric nurse specialists, and other healthcare providers are eligible for this grant. The deadline to apply is June 27, 2024, at 7:30 pm (ET).

This funding opportunity will address emerging challenges that relate to the development, use, and/or advancement of well-designed, interoperable health IT. Applications should have interest in developing innovative ways to improve healthcare-data quality to support response development of AI tools in health care and accelerate the adoption of health IT in behavioral healthcare settings. Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education. The deadline to apply is July 12, 2024.

The National Institute of Nursing Research released this funding opportunity to advance research that reduces firearm injury and disparities through the development and evaluation of firearm injury prevention initiatives. Applications require a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives. The deadline to apply is July 26, 2024.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) funding opportunity for AI supports healthcare safety by determining how AI system breakthroughs can affect patient safety and how these programs can be safely implemented. Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education. Funding information is TBD. The first estimated application deadline is Fall 2024.

Through this program, fellows come to the nation’s capital for a year-long experience to learn about and participate in the health policy-making process from direct exposure to policymakers in both public and private sectors. The program also provides scholarships for master’s level students in health policy. The deadline to apply is October 18, 2024, at 5 PM (PT).
