Accreditation Guidance on Developing & Implementing IPE: Deep Dive -2019 HPAC-National Center Report

Hosted by the
Panelists from the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC) and the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education will share the report鈥檚 development process and the implications for institutions on communication and collaboration within interprofessional education (IPE).
The writing team members will also discuss the document鈥檚 consensus on terminology, systematic approach for IPE, framework to develop an IPE program, and direction for accreditation boards/commissions to assess IPE standards.
Health professions faculty, students, and clinicians will discover best practices that they can use to assist with IPE efforts at their home institutions in anticipation of accreditation.

Objectives:
- Summarize the findings of the report from HPAC and National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education with regard to terminology, frameworks, and direction for accreditation boards on IPE.
- Plan an approach to foster IPE in their home institutions.
- Incorporate goals, design, assessment and evaluation into plan for quality IPE program.
- Examine the impact of accreditation boards on establishing quality elements into their standards.

Barbara Barzansky, PhD, MHPECo-Secretary, Liaison Committee on Medical Education
American Medical Association (AMA)
Barbara Barzansky received her PhD in Developmental and Cell Biology from the University of California-Irvine and did postdoctoral work in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin. She served as a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Barzansky received a Master鈥檚 Degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois-Chicago and remained at that institution as a faculty member in the Center for Educational Development (now Department of Medical Education). She then moved to the American Medical Association (AMA), where she now serves as Director of the Division of Undergraduate Medical Education and AMA Co-Secretary of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
Dr. Barzansky鈥檚 research has focused on factors that influence the ability to bring about change in medical education. Previously, she coordinated an AMA effort, the Initiative to Transform Medical Education, aimed at identifying and implementing needed changes across the medical education continuum to assure that physicians are prepared for practice in the evolving health care environment.

Dr. Brandt is an internationally recognized leader in the field of interprofessional practice and education and serves as the founding director of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. The National Center, based at University of Minnesota, is a public-private partnership charged by its founders to provide the leadership, evidence, and resources needed to guide the nation on the use of interprofessional education and collaborative practice as a way to enhance the experience of health care, improve population health and reduce the overall cost of care. The founders and funders of the National Center are the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration; the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Minnesota.
Peter H. Vlasses, PharmD, DSc (Hon.), FCCPExecutive Director
Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)
His professional experience includes service in academia, clinical practice, and clinical research. In each of his professional roles, Dr. Vlasses was a leader in innovative interprofessional education, practice and research initiatives. Dr. Vlasses is an American College of Clinical Pharmacy Fellow. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors and has served as Chair and then Treasurer of the Board. Dr. Vlasses received his BS and PharmD degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (PCPS) and completed a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Jeffery Stewart, DDS, MSSenior Vice President for Interprofessional and Global Collaboration
American Dental Education Association
Jeffery Stewart, DDS, MS is Senior Vice President for Interprofessional and Global Collaboration at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). Prior to joining ADEA, he had been a faculty member at three dental schools. In his current role with ADEA, he is a member of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Board, IPEC Planning Committee, and the Interprofessional Professionalism Collaborative (IPPC).
He attended college at the University of Delaware and received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina. Following a general practice residency, he attended the University of Michigan earning a master鈥檚 degree in oral pathology and diagnosis.
